The Last Shot

The Bulls came into Game 6 trailing 3-2 in the series. A loss meant a Game 7 in Utah, hostile ground where the altitude alone could break a team. Jordan, fighting exhaustion and the weight of a dynasty's possible end, knew there would be no tomorrow.

The Jazz had home court. They had Stockton and Malone, finally on the edge of a first title. The Delta Center was deafening. Everything pointed towards a decisive Game 7.

Jordan had other plans.

With 41.9 seconds left, the Bulls trailed 86-83. What followed was 41.9 seconds of basketball replayed for eternity.

First, Jordan drove and scored. 86-85 Jazz.

Then came The Steal. Malone caught the ball on the block, Jordan came from the weak side and stripped it clean. No whistle. Turnover.

Jordan brought the ball up slowly. 18.9 seconds. 15. 10. He sized up Bryon Russell at the top of the key. A slight hesitation, a crossover, Russell stumbled, and Jordan rose from twenty feet.

The ball hung in the air for what felt like forever.

Nothing but net.

87-86 Bulls. 5.2 seconds remaining. Utah's last possession went nowhere. The Bulls were champions. Again.

The Last Shot became more than a game-winner. It became the full stop at the end of a sentence eight years in the writing.

Jordan would never play another meaningful game in a Bulls jersey. The dynasty ended not with a whimper but with the most dramatic closing act in NBA history. Every great player since has been measured against that instant: the willingness to want the ball, to take the shot, and to make history.
