Four years after The Decision tore a city apart, LeBron James wrote a letter. Not a press conference. Not a television special. A letter, published in Sports Illustrated, explaining why he was going home.
"I'm coming back to Cleveland because I believe I can help bring a championship to this city."
Cleveland had not won a major title since 1964. The Browns had broken hearts for decades. The Indians kept finding new ways to lose. And the Cavaliers? They had become the league's punchline after LeBron left, his jerseys literally burning in the streets.
Yet here he was, returning to finish what he had started. Older. Wiser. Hardened by four Finals in Miami. And this time he had help: Kyrie Irving, the most gifted ball handler of his generation, and Kevin Love, a big man who could stretch the floor like a guard.
The first year ended in pain: injuries to Irving and Love left LeBron alone against the Warriors, dragging out two wins on will alone before falling. The second brought a 3-1 Finals deficit against a 73-win juggernaut. Everything pointed towards failure. Again.
